Professional Project Evaluation
For the Professional Project we were to work with a live brief. This was to give us a better understanding of working to a strict deadline and working with a client and conducting ourselves professional business manor. I was to work in a group designing a Light installation for a light festival for Lumen Ortis. The aim of the light festival is to highlight the Bournemouth gardens as a positive place to be a night. This brief was an exciting prospect as working on installations in an out door environment would provide many obstacles to overcome.
Working in a professional relationship with Lumen Ortis has been a great learning experience. We had to create our work within the guides of the council and the organisers. We had too creative process for this project we were clear on what the outline of the project were we had to create a piece to reflect on the space and we all decided that the project should be green and require no outside power for our lights. To create sculptures without the use of mains electricity we attached batteries and LEDs was the most effective way of lighting sculptures for maximum effect with the minimum amount of power. Working the electronics into some of the smaller sculptures took a lot of experimentation to produce the most streamlined design. This was a lengthy process but the final outcome I feel was a success. The projections were a challenge without requiring the use of mains. Computer power packs were used to power the projector, the only downside was the limited time that we were able to have the projections running. The importance of this project being green was key and using recycled materials and materials that after the installation could themselves be in turn recycled. This project and the fact we were working to a life brief meant at the organization of this project was key to the success of our installation. This project was a great success compared to my previous projects, this was because compared to the other projects I worked closely with the timetable of our group had set out in the early stages of the project. There were complications in the setting up of the event and the space we had originally designed for, in the end we were unable to use. Although we moved plot and the space we were now given was considerably larger I think in the long run worked to our advantage the new area was darker and gave room for people to explore greater into the installation and in doing so the park it’s self.
The aim of enhancing the space was of the utmost importance and I feel that the sculptures created alongside with the animation projections successfully enhanced space we were provided. Watching people exploring into an area that people would not commonly venture into even more so at night was exciting to see. This exploration was what I had hoped that peoples reaction to the piece. I think the projections were a great success and the fact the projections were portable created a natural fluidity, enhanced more by the fact
that the environment they were in was enhanced giving a whole immersive experience not just a 2D viewing but a physical experience. Watching people interact and explore the work gave a great sense of achievement, this was the first time I had undergone any project on this scale and the reaction through watching the people and speaking to them there was a very positive feel. Our work stood with the other installations and the park for a night instead of being an empty dark place was full of people laughter and fun. The turn out from the locals was great and the curiosity of Bournemouth around the gardens was a real thrill.
I think that if I were to do this project again I would like to have created more for the space, the upscale in the size of plot we were working with was a difficult challenge but we worked with what we were given on the night and I feel that with the time we had to prepare for a space considerable larger than our original was great. We also had small amount of vandalism during the day during the set up process, this was unavoidable and we were able to repair some of the damage. Although we had these problems it gave our group a chance to problem solve and think on our feet to make the best of the situation that we were in. With our piece “Nature Ain’t Rubbish” we have since been offered opportunities to take our work to Beach Break Festival and a Dubnium music even that shall be held out doors. We are also in talks with the organisers of Lumen Ortis about traveling it too more music festivals throughout the summer. This is exciting and a great opportunity for myself as during this year at uni my interest in creating installation based work is now my intention of a career heading. This project shall prepare me greatly for my next year of study, as my in my final year I would like to create a project that allows me to put on installation and with what I have learn from this is an invaluable experience.
